STM-DataCite Joint Statement
The issue of open access to the outputs of research is being hotly debated in the UK, the US, and online. One of the concerns, in the new world of data-intensive research, is about the attitude that publishers would take to the publication of research data. It was therefore encouraging to see the approach being taken by the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) Publishers when they signed a joint statement with DataCite to encourage publishers and data centres to link articles and underlying data.
The statement encourages deposition of data into data centres; creation of bidirectional links between data and publications, making these links maximally visible; support for data reuse through citations and asks for other organisations involved in research data management to join in.
ANDS, as a foundation member of DataCite, welcomes these principles and commends them to those interested in data publication and citation.
