Structure and meaning of 'party' | Best practice for creating a party record | Example RIF-CS | Contributing party records to Trove
Meaning and purpose
A party record describes a person, group or role related to an activity, to the creation, update, or maintenance of a collection, or to the provision of a service.
Parties are included in the ANDS Collections Registry because they add to the discoverability of collections and add valuable contextual information, including assisting with determination of value for a collection. Generally, parties, whether persons or groups, will be linked to collections, activities and services through use of the Related Object element.
The kind of party (party type) is described by choosing from the following:
- group: one or more persons acting as a family, group, association, partnership, corporation, institution or agency.
- person: a human being; or an identity (or role) assumed by one or more human beings.
- administrativePosition: a kind of party where the position name and contact information are present but the identity of the party filling the role is not specified.
Research domain examples
"Professor John Smith" is a person and "The Australian National University" is a group. "Data custodian", "Data Officer" or "Data Manager" are examples of administrative positions (or roles).
Additional information
The date on which metadata describing a party was last changed in the source system can be recorded. See Date modified.
Party Infrastructure project
The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) Party Infrastructure Project is a collaboration between the National Library of Australia (NLA) and ANDS. The project aims to improve the discovery of research outputs and data through persistently identifying Australian researchers and research organisations. For more information, see the ANDS Guide ARDC Party Infrastructure and Introducing the ARDC Party Infrastructure: A guide for ANDS Partners.
For guidance on the use of identifiers for researchers (NLA party identifier, local identifiers, and publisher or international identifiers such as ThomsonReuters ResearcherID, Elsevier's Scopus AuthorID, VIAF and ORCID, see detailed information in the Identifier element section.
